Blech.

You know you're not feeling good when you can't even find enough concentration to play video games.

On a lighter note: [May. 30th, 2009|04:45 pm]
Anyone else here ever play "Braid?" It's a game on Xbox Live Arcade (and PC, I believe) that's really interesting. The music and art direction are unlike anything I've seen in a game, and the gameplay take arguably the most classic video game format (side-scrolling platformer) and twists it about in a mind-bending way. I've only played the free demo, but I encourage you to check it out.

The dawn of a new era [May. 16th, 2009|11:01 am]
My computer died a few days ago. As a result I am forced to write this post on my iPod, which is not exactly the most convenient way to type. I was considering making a longer post that I had intended to make as soon as Lost finished its fifth season, giving my reactions to its season finale as well as those of Dollhouse and Fringe, but even typing these few sentences has been a pain in the ass. So, I'll leave you with that.

Coraline [Mar. 3rd, 2009|02:05 pm]
I find it interesting that in all the promotions for Coraline, Neil Gaiman's name was practically nowhere to be seen. This is, I'm assuming, an attempt to gloss over the box office failure of Gaiman's last film adaptation, Stardust. Coraline, as a story, despite being a children's film, fits much more with what I think of as Gaiman's style - darker, more original.

The film is very good, despite a few bits of awkward exposition dialogue (the ghosts) but the look of the film (directed by Henry Selick, who directed Nightmare Before Christmas - I guess Tim Burton produced it?) is fantastic and other than those aforementioned bits of weird dialogue, it's well written.

As a Gaiman loyalist, I think this does a good job of making up for Stardust - which, while I did like it, did not properly represent Neil Gaiman's style.

Anyway, to sum up, go see Coraline - unless you have weird hang-ups about going to see a kid's movie.

RIP Mr Kim [Feb. 23rd, 2009|06:57 pm]
I just heard that my 10th grade History Teacher, Christopher Kim, died. The obituary didn't reveal the cause of death, but it is a shock as Mr. Kim was only 32.

It saddens me to learn of this, as Mr. Kim was a good teacher and a kind person. My best wishes go out to his family.

Oscar Reactions: [Feb. 23rd, 2009|01:11 am]
Well, it was a fairly political Oscar night this year - not that that's anything new. I liked the opening number Hugh Jackman did but some of the later stuff lost a bit of steam. Still - decently paced night.

I faced the same problem I do most years of not having seen a number of the nominees. I did see three of the Best Picture noms - Milk, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire, which won (in case you didn't watch.) I had a mixed reaction to the best picture win. While Slumdog was clearly a well-made film, it has been pointed out that it is a film which is directed by a white guy, written by a white guy (well, adapted by), and yet it is presented in a manner that seems meant to suggest it is authentically Indian. I can't fault the film for this - I enjoyed it and it's a setting that warrants examination. I would, however, like to see what Indian audiences think of it - how well it represents a truly Indian concept of life.

I thought Milk was a fantastic film and probably should have had James Franco and Emile Hirsch nominated along with Josh Brolin for supporting actor. Granted, Heath Ledger was 100% guaranteed to win that category, and the academy doesn't like to over-represent a film in the same category (it sometimes does.) Sean Penn's acceptance speech, despite focusing a bit on the negative, was appropriate. It is time that America stops side-stepping social progress because of petty bigotry and grants constitutionally-guaranteed equal rights to all its citizens.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button did seem to have Oscar written all over it, and I think that if it weren't for Slumdog it would have swept the awards. I don't really know why Slumdog was the popular one, but I guess the Academy was more interested in seeing exotic (well, maybe not so exotic) India than a man's backwards life spanning the 20th century.

Wall-E was a lock for best animated film. I liked Jack Black's comment about betting on Pixar.

Various New Things I've Been Watching: [Feb. 18th, 2009|01:01 am]

That's about all I can think of right now.

Cell Phone Issue [Feb. 8th, 2009|12:56 pm]
For some reason for the last couple days my cell phone has had about a 12-hour battery life (without using it at all) and no reception anywhere.

So - mainly for the benefit of my good friend Mr. Broyles - I'm sorry I didn't call you on your birthday. I tried to call you, but that didn't work and then I tried to send you a text message but I don't think it went through. Happy belated birthday, man!

Someone didn't do their research: [Jan. 31st, 2009|12:01 pm]
From IMDB: )

This happens all the time with movies - they get popular and successful and someone figures they can get a piece of the action. Plagiarism does exist in Hollywood, sure, but this lady clearly didn't do her research. Or maybe she should be in trouble for ripping off F. Scott Fitzgerald! Anyway, I thought it was funny.

Coming Home for the Holidays [Dec. 16th, 2008|09:46 am]
Hey, all. Long time since I've posted, mainly because there's been too much to deal with that I couldn't condense it into an LJ post.

I'm still not going to do that, however:

I am coming home on Christmas Eve and will be in town for about ten days. During said time, I would like to see all you folks.

Bam.

Sea Cucumbers just became one of my favorite animals... [Nov. 16th, 2008|08:02 pm]
According to a book my sister is reading, sea cucumbers, when threatened, expel their internal organs out their anus. When the threat has passed, they grow new ones. This makes them easy to prepare, as all you need to do to gut them is scare them, then kill them and you're ready to cook.

The cherry on top of the sundae here was that I imagined it all as a Disney/Pixar kind of thing, where Nemo swims up to a sea cucumber, startling it and causing it to do this. Next shot - Nemo totally tossing his lunch.
